Bags Galore
by Lauren Goldman on January 24, 2010

Those who know me well won't be surprised to hear that I'm… well, cynical. Especially when it comes to new styles. I'm even more cynical when "old" is the new "new". Like Ray-Bans, for example. Why will they not just go away?
For me it started with Goyard. I realized there was a new enemy when I first noticed my friends paying $800 for a celebrity-endorsed tote bag. I really could not understand it.
I waited for the tote bag to go away (I can really be stubborn when I don't like a trend) but instead it has spread. And so, this December for my much-maligned birthday, I was only very slightly surprised to be presented with a Marc by Marc Jacobs Tate tote bag.
It was a sweet gift.. And I find that I really like it. It's easy to dig through. It doesn't have gold or silver finishes that make me feel guilty if I don't match it to my jewelry. And best of all, it's lightweight. I suspect, somehow, that as handbags have become so hardware-heavy, the tote has become irresistible. At least that's my excuse as I put it on my shoulder and just… well, leave it there. Is there a Goyard in my future? Perhaps not, but there might be another Marc Jacobs tote - after all, he makes them in every color.
