Excess Defined?

In the news: Hermès posted an 8.5% increase in sales last year. Also in the news: Victoria Beckham reportedly has added a new Birkin bag to her already large collection of the Hermès handbags. Her collection is valued at around two million dollars.

Could there be a link?

Okay, I'm just joking around, but seriously, Hermès is doing well these days?

We live in a different world now. And excess now is frowned on. But as surprising as Mrs. Beckham's collection may be, I don't think it speaks any more ill of her today than it did five years ago before the economic downturn was upon us.

I like Hermès. I want them to stay in business. The company was founded in 1837 as a saddle shop. They take great pride in their merchandise and stand behind their product. Who does that today?

And so I'm forced to revise my definition of excess. Victoria refuses to give up her handbags. I refuse up to give up sushi dinners at my favorite LA sushi joint. We each do our small part to keep the vendors we love in business.

So can Hermès brag that Birkin bags better the world? Hm. I'll get back to you on that one. In the meantime, I'm ordering some yellowtail takeout.
