My birthday was a few weeks ago and I have to say that I received two kinds of gifts, those that came off my list (love getting exactly what I wanted) and those that were gift certificates (did I say how much I love getting exactly what I wanted). Gift certificates can be a great way to gift whether you're unsure or whether you feel that you recognize that a person has a favorite store.
