You Can Have this Bag...For a Day

I admit, the first time I read about Avelle (The New Bag Borrow or Steal), I was fascinated. I imagined myself becoming a member and sporting a different handbag every two weeks.

For those of you not familiar with the concept, the company rents handbags (and jewelry) by the week or month. Returns are free, so there's great incentive to rent more bags.

It was around the time I was having this fantasy about becoming a card-carrying member, that a successful friend of mine hired a new personal assistant. Her assistant started spending all her income on new jeans, nice bags and beautiful jewelry: she wanted to look as good as her boss.

It gave me a reality check. This kid was the reason Avelle does so well. People want to be seen in the latest and greatest. Is this how I wanted to live? Do I really care what people think so much that I need to actually rent a handbag?

The answer is: it depends. A prime example is this lovely Louis Vuitton clutch. It would go beautifully with a formal dress I own. But if I wore the dress to an event, there's no way I'd find a bag this color in a store – too difficult, and I'd end up spending money on a bag that's the wrong color, just to have something to carry.

So with this possibility in mind, I signed up (for free) on the Avelle website. And guess what? They don't just rent bags, they sell them too! And they're having a sale.

Excuse me, I have to go shopping!
